Update 11/19/20: Dickens on the Square 2020 has been canceled, by vote of the Galveston Historical Foundation board due to concerns about rising COVID-19 infections in the region. Plans are in place for the full Dickens on the Strand to event to return in December 2021. Click here for more information.
For 2020, Galveston Historical Foundation has put a spin on its crowd-pleasing Dickens on the Strand event at the beginning of December. This year’s adjusted take on the Victorian holiday experience takes a smaller, more spread out, socially distanced event.
This year’s Dickens on The Squares will offer guests ticketed access to specially crafted Dickens experiences in five separate locations (Hendley Green, Old Galveston Square, Saengerfest Park, Galveston Historic Seaport, and Pier 22).
Each square will feature entertainment, Dickens’ pubs, and food options.
There will also be a specially designed holiday market on Pier 21, featuring numerous crafts, food, and holiday vendors that guests seek out each year.
There will also be a select number of specially ticketed private events at numerous GHF sites, all following similar safety protocols.
Guests in Victorian attire will receive a limited-edition commemorative keepsake.
Ticketing blocks are available for 10am to 2pm or 2pm to 6pm windows on both Saturday and Sunday.
Social Distancing & COVID-19
For each square, there will be a dedicated entrance and exit, strict capacity limits, mask requirements for entry and while in the squares, sanitation stations throughout the grounds, social distancing reminders, and more from Galveston’s city-approved COVID response plan. Visitors who are unable to comply with the plan can be removed from the event grounds.
In addition, GHF will remain in contact with city and community leaders and health officials. Should a spike in COVID-19 cases occur, public health emergency be issued, a natural disaster occur, or other factors that could impact the event’s safe production, GHF will respond accordingly with increased measures or event cancellation.

At this time, guidance from experts urges people to continue wearing face masks when in public spaces, practice social distancing of at least six feet, limit your touching of surfaces and frequently use hand sanitizer or soap and water to keep your hands clean.
Before heading out, take time to familiarize with your destination’s requirements or restrictions at this moment, and be sure to contact them ahead of time with any questions or concerns.
