- Cookbook Launch: Anita Jaisinghani of Pondicheri at MFA Shop | Friday, September 16 | FREE – Houston chef Anita Jaisinghani of Pondicheri restaurant visits Museum of Fine Arts, Houston for the debut launch of her cookbook, Masala: Recipes from India, the Land of Spices. Meet the chef, enjoy light hors d’oeuvres, and purchase a signed copy of the book. 4pm to 6pm.
- Mexican Independence Day at Clay Family Eastern Glades | Friday, September 16 | FREE – Sprawl out at Memorial Park’s Eastern Glades with an evening of delicious food, dancing from Mixteco Ballet Folklorico and music by Mariachi Tradicion de Jalisco. 5:30pm to 9pm.
- Juraj Valčuha Inaugural Weekend: Verdi’s Requiem at Jones Hall | Friday, September 16 to Sunday, September 18 – Houston Symphony’s new music director, Juraj Valčuha leads the Symphony in a performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem for his first weekend leading the orchestra. $29 and up. Times vary.
- End of Summer Wine Tasting at Bodega Bellaire | Saturday, September 17 | FREE – Natural wine guru Steve Buechner of Light Years Wines will be on hand for a tasting that also features a CBD bar, a Houston Dairymaids cheese tasting station, and fresh baked goods from Magnol Bakery. 1pm to 4pm.
- Canvas & Cocktails at Houston Botanic Garden | Saturday, September 17 – H-Town artist and teacher Roberto Castilllo leads a three-hour cocktail-infused painting party based on plants found within Houstown’s stunning gardens. $35. 2pm.
- Texas Bonita Market at the Esplanade at Navigation | Saturday, September 17 | No Cover – Shop from a curated selection of local vendors at the East End Esplanade, while you take in DJs, ballet folklorico and photo backdrops. 3pm to 9pm.
- The Wizard of Oz Movie Screening at Discovery Green | Saturday, September 17 | FREE – Be transported over the rainbow to the Technicolor Land of Oz at a special outdoor screening of the classic 1939 MGM movie musical starring Judy Garland. 7pm.
- Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán in Concert at Cullen Performance Hall | Saturday, September 17 – With a history that dates back to 1897, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán celebrates its 125th anniversary with a stop at University of Houston’s Cullen Performance Hall ahead of tour stops that will take them to Europe. $45 and up. 8pm.
- Boxing: Canelo Álvarez vs. GGG III Screening at Bagby Park | Saturday, September 17 – La Calle Tacos at Bagby Park hosts an outdoor screening of this highly anticipated matchup that caps a trilogy of controversial fights between the two boxers. A full cocktail menu and tasty tacos will be available for purchase on-site. Advance tickets are highly recommended, starting at $10, with tables available for reservation. 8pm.
- Numbers’ 44th Anniversary Party at Numbers Nightclub | Saturday, September 17 – The iconic—and always eclectic—Numbers Nightclub in Montrose celebrates its 44th birthday with drink specials, big prizes and all-night dancing. Cover charge ranges from $5 to $15. 9pm.
- Houston Blues & Jazz Festival at Multiple Locations | Saturday, September 17 & Sunday, September 18 | FREE – The first of two weekends in September sees world-renown names in jazz come to Houston venues, including hard bop greats Nellie McKay and the Cookers at Miller Outdoor Theatre, and Frank Lacy and Bayou City Funk at Axelrad. - Richmond Pickle Fest at Fulbrook Ale Works | Sunday, September 18 – Pickle addicts will want to head to Richmond for this pickle-themed festival, featuring pickle-themed food and drink (including pickle beer and pickle margaritas), plus vendors, live music, live pro wrestling and more. $14.99; free for ages under 12. VIP tickets are $39 (21+ only). 11am.
- Family Day: Our Classical Past at Bayou Bend Collection & Gardens | Sunday, September 18 | FREE – The American Decorative Arts museum hosts an afternoon of free, family-friendly fun that explores the influences of the ancient world on early American art and design. Take in a performance of From India, with Love by Anjali Dance Theater, a musical program creating ekphrastic poetry with author and artist Hal Evans, giant puppets of figures from Greek mythology and more. 1pm to 5pm.
- H. Ben Taub Memorial Cup at Houston Polo Club | Sunday, September 18 – The new polo season kicks off for the fall, featuring a world class polo match with player parade, live music, a Champagne divot stomp at halftime, and a Best Dressed Contest. $35; $15.50 for ages 12 and under.
