Take a fresh and clever look at how cultures combine in the Bayou City at Diverse-City, An Ode To Houston, showcasing photographer Isabelle Perreau’s new works, at Archway Gallery from Saturday, October 3 to Thursday, November 5, 2020.
A French-born photographer and now Houstonian, Perreau has created a new series celebrating the curious, charming, colorful, and contrasting ways that Houston integrates cultures from across the globe.
The exhibit can be viewed virtually 24 hours a day, during limited weekend hours at the Gallery, and by appointment for groups of 10 or less.
Isabelle Perreau Discovers Houston
When the photographer first “met” Houston, she was not seduced by its beauty. Instead, she recalled, “scary highways, the immensity of the town, and the suffocating weather.”
But, ever the curious traveler, Perreau soon discovered the whole world united—colorful India, fragrant China, joyful Latin America, and expansive Africa. “I fell in love,” she exclaims. “I embraced my new hometown from the bottom of my heart.”
Perreau’s work in this exhibition is a reflection of her deep belief that Houston’s diversity and international character is the source of its strength and richness. “Houston is the most diverse city in the United States,” she said. “This, of course, is the result of immigration.”
She sees Houston as a shining example of a multitude of nationalities and religions living together in respect, solidarity, and friendship. “It’s a human lesson for everyone that, with decency and respect, peace is possible.”
