Top Performing Arts Openings This Week: January 23 to 29, 2023

  • Paradise Blue at Ensemble Theatre | Wednesday, January 25 to Sunday, January 29 | Ongoing – When gifted trumpeter Blue considers selling his jazz club in Detroit, the fates of many are thrown into question. This drama is infused with music, and explores the connections that make us human. This production runs through Sunday, February 26. $34 and up. Showtimes vary.
  • Drunk Shakespeare at the Emerald Theatre | Thursday, January 26 to Saturday, January 28 | Ongoing – Five professional actors assemble on stage to perform one of the great plays of Shakespeare with a catch—one actor downs five shots of whiskey prior to the performance and the other actors strive to keep the script on track. $39 and up. Times vary.
  • Houston Grand Opera presents Werther at Wortham Center | Friday, January 27 & Sunday, January 29 | Ongoing – Massanet’s elegant opera is a story of unrequited love that cascades to a tragic end. Rarely seen, this opera is back on the HGO stage for the first time in 40 years. $20 and up. Friday 7:30pm; Sunday 2pm.
  • Family Classical Concert at Rice University’s Stude Concert Hall | Saturday, January 28 | FREE – The Shepherd School of music presents this family-friendly morning of music that tells a tale from The Arabian Nights. Best for those six and up, there’s a meet-and-greet with the musicians and their instruments before the concert. Registration required. 10:30am.
  • Main Street Theater for Youth presents The Lightning Thief at MATCH | Sunday, January 29 | Ongoing – Based on Rick Riordan’s bestselling book, this musical finds a teenage Percy Jackson discovering he’s a demigod. Now, he must find Zeus’ lightning bolt and prevent a war among the gods. Recommended for fifth grade and older. This production rungs through Sunday, February 19. $20 and up. 2:30pm.

Final Performances This Week

Saturday, January 28 sees the final curtains on Classical Theatre Company’s The School for Scandal at the DeLuxe Theater, as well as Houston Grand Opera’s The Marriage of Figaro. And the following day on Sunday, January 29 will be your last chance to catch the Garden Theatre’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream when it closes at MATCH.
