Summer’s hottest culinary happenings include a seafood-fueled Fourth of July bash with fireworks over the bay, a farm-fresh “Summer Cookout,” and the return of the cult favorite Tex-Mex BBQ Block Party.

  • Fireworks Over the Bay at Pier 6 Seafood & Oyster House | Thursday, July 4 – Pier 6 goes big for its annual Independence Day bayside bash. This year, the San Leon Fire Department will have a fire engine on site for kiddos to check out from 2pm to 4pm; and guests can enjoy live music, a face painter, balloon artist, popcorn machine, and sno-cones from 4pm to 9pm, with fireworks on the pier to end the night. Pair the festivities with fresh Gulf seafood, tropical cocktails, draft beer and wine. Reservations recommended; those only viewing the fireworks can purchase $5 wristbands. 2pm to 9pm.
  • “Ignite Your Fourth” Dinner at Cru | Thursday, July 4 to Saturday, July 6 Cru in River Oaks and the Woodlands will honor America with a special celebratory menu, featuring a tomato and burrata salad, Allen Brothers bavette steak with garlic mash, grilled veggie kabob and thyme butter, and a “Big Boom” finisher of local peach and blackberry cobbler. $45 per person. 6pm to 10pm.
  • First Saturday Market at Hope Farms | Saturday, July 6 | FREE Hope Farms in Sunnyside is celebrating the season at July’s First Saturday farmers market, offering a “Summer Cookout” with farm fresh veggies, artisan goods, gardening lessons, free cooking classes spotlighting summertime dishes with chef Kevin Bryant, and fun for the whole family. 9am to 2pm.
  • Houston Soul Food Festival at the Zone | Saturday, July 6 Folks can taste soul food favorites from over 30 food vendors from around the state at the annual Houston Soul Food Fest, from smothered pork chops, oxtails and fried fish to candied yams, greens, and funnel cake. Small business vendors will be onsite as well. Limited free tickets with RSVP; $5 and up closer to the event. 10am to 6pm.
  • 4th Annual Lumpia Eating Contest at Be More Pacific | Sunday, July 7 | FREE Be More Pacific in the Heights is bringing back its highly-anticipated Annual Lumpia Eating Contest for an exciting day filled with community spirit, local business support and a whole lotta lumpia. Contestants, primarily from local small businesses in the food, beverage, and entertainment industries, will face off to see who can eat the most lumpia, including the defending champion from Seaside Poke. Festivities begin at 3pm; contest at 3:45pm.
  • Houston Chef Series at Multiple Locations | Select Nights from Wednesday, July 10 to Wednesday, July 31 Landry’s, Inc. has brought back its annual Houston Chef Series, set on select evenings throughout summer and featuring this year’s theme, “Presidential State Dinners.” This month, diners can enjoy chef-led multi-course meals at Brenner’s on the Bayou, Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse, Grotto Downtown, Willie G’s Seafood, and Morton’s The Steakhouse. $125 and up. 7pm to 9pm.
  • Mixers & Elixirs at Houston Museum of Natural Science | Friday, July 12 – Experience the museum after dark and with a cocktail in hand as the Houston Museum of Natural Science opens its doors for the summertime Mixers & Elixirs event. Guests can hang with the dinos, hit the dance floor, enjoy cash bars, and chow down on food truck eats. $25. 7pm to 10pm.
  • Summer Cookout at Hamsa | Sunday, July 14 Two top Houston chefs are collaborating on a cultural summer cookout—Hamsa chef Yotam Dolev and chef Dominick Lee—combining the flavors of Tel Aviv and New Orleans with inspiration from cookouts both chefs attended growing up. The family-style meal features dishes such as blackened chicken kebab with black tahini sauce and charred tomato, lemon harissa Gulf shrimp grits with Louisiana chow chow, Marguez jambalaya with raisins and pine nuts, and challah banana foster bread pudding. $65 per person. Noon to 7pm.
  • Tex-Mex BBQ Block Party 2024 at Saint Arnold Brewing Company | Sunday, July 14  Barbecue enthusiasts won’t want to miss this cult favorite event, the 3rd Annual Tex-Mex BBQ Block Party. Held in Saint Arnold’s air-conditioned Beer Hall, the foodie fiesta shows off the growing influence of Tejano and Tex-Mex cooking traditions in Central Texas–style barbecue. Think brisket chimichangas, smoked pork shoulder pozole, and bbq tacos with all the proper fixin’s. $70 and up. 1pm to 4pm.
  • Bastille Day at Etoile Cuisine et Bar | Sunday, July 14 In honor of the French National Day commemorating the Storming of the Bastille during the French Revolution, Uptown’s Etoile Cuisine et Bar will be hosting its annual Fête de la Bastille with a special four-course menu from chef Philippe Verpiand. Indulge in roasted nectarine with 18 month-aged serrano ham and shaved summer truffle; seared wild striped sea bass served with smoked eggplant “caviar,” tomato confit and a rich saffron emulsion; roasted duck breast with duck fat “Anna” potato cake a black cherry sauce; and lime and rosemary ice cream, pavlova meringue, fresh berries and strawberry syrup for dessert. $88 per person; wine pairing is $38 per person. 5pm to 9pm.
  • Brewsology Beer Fest at Houston Museum of Natural Science | Saturday, July 20 Taking over HMNS after hours, the Brewsology Beer Fest rocks samples from dozens of local craft breweries and cideries, including SpindleTap, Lone Pint, City Orchard, Galveston Island Brewing and more. Attendees can access the brews and chat with brewery reps throughout the museum and exhibits. $55 and up. 7pm to 11pm.
  • The Generous Pour at The Capital Grille | All Month Long – Returning for its 16th year and running throughout the summer, The Generous Pour offers guests a unique wine tasting and educational experience curated by The Capital Grille’s sommeliers. This year’s theme is “Elevations: The Nature of Wine”, offering a curated wine journey through California’s coastal growing regions of Sonoma, Mendocino and Santa Barbara. $45 and up, with the purchase of a dinner entrée. Times vary.
