See the latest performing arts productions and theater happenings opening across Houston from Monday, May 27 to Sunday, June 2, 2024.

This week brings the end of a popular Broadway musical, plus the return of an annual Zydeco celebration, jazz orchestras and a sampling of dance through the weekend.

Top Performing Arts Openings This Week: May 27 to June 2, 2024

  • Dance Source Houston presents Barnstorm Dance Fest at MATCH | Tuesday, May 28 to Saturday, June 1 – Celebrating the breadth, depth, and diversity of dance in Greater Houston and beyond, this festival is an exciting sampling of dance genres. Expect a weekend of performances, workshops and more. $25. Showtimes vary.
  • The Joe Sample Celebration at Hobby Center | Thursday, May 30 – Guest artist Stix Hooper makes his long-awaited homecoming back to Houston to perform with the Houston Jazz Orchestra. Hooper and Sample founded the legendary group “The Crusaders” here in Houston. The performance features new and existing arrangements of compositions made famous by the Crusaders. $38 and up. 7pm.
  • Time Stands Still at Theatre Southwest | Friday, May 31 | Ongoing – A photojournalist and a foreign correspondent juggle the options of family and safety versus adventure and purpose in this 2009 play by Douglas Margulies. Nominated for two Tony Awards, The New York Daily News said Margulies “writes with intelligence and humor and creates dialogue that always hits the ear as real.” This production runs through Saturday, June 15. $22. Friday and Saturday 8pm; Sunday 3pm.
  • 35th Annual Accordion Kings & Queens Concert at Miller Outdoor Theatre | Saturday, June 1 | FREE – This highly anticipated annual concert of the state’s most dynamic performers will feature Las Fenix, 3x Grammy Award winner Sunny Sauceda, and Marcus Ardoin & Da Zydeco Legendz. The evening is a showcase of the diverse styles of accordion music performed in Texas. 7pm.
  • Houston Chamber Choir presents The Voice of Brubeck at Stude Concert Hall | Saturday, June 1 – The Grammy-winning choir is joined by Chris and Dan Brubeck and other special guests in a program that celebrates Dave Brubeck’s contributions to jazz and his work with new musical forms. $45; some discounts available. 7:30pm.
  • The Selfish Giant at Asia Society Texas | Saturday, June 1 & Sunday, June 2 – In this ingenious production by Taiwan’s The Puppet & Its Double Theater, The Selfish Giant brings to life Oscar Wilde’s beloved story of a selfish giant who learns about the true meaning of friendship and generosity through the innocence of children. $20. Times vary.
  • Houston Symphony: An Alpine Symphony at Jones Hall | Saturday, June 1 & Sunday, June 2 – Envision flower-filled meadows, sparkling glaciers, and a breathtaking view from the summit when Music Director Juraj Valčuha leads one of the natural wonders of the music world, Strauss’s An Alpine Symphony in Downtown. $35 and up. Saturday 8pm; Sunday 2:30pm.
