This week’s highlights include the three-day convention known as Comicpalooza, plus a new Broadway show, marketplaces across Greater Houston, and the last vibes of spring.

  • TUTS presents Disney’s Newsies at Hobby Center | Tuesday, May 21 to Sunday, May 26 | Ongoing – The wildly popular musical tells the story of a band of newspaper boys and their allies, who stand up to some of New York City’s most powerful publishers. This new production of the crowd-pleasing show should be a family favorite. This production runs through Sunday, June 2. $40 and up. Showtimes vary.
  • Idles in Concert at White Oak Music Hall | Wednesday, May 22 – The Bristol rock band is super fresh off the release of their fifth studio album, Tangk, and will bring it to the White Oak crowd when they stop by on their Love is the FING tour. $40 and up. 5:30pm.
  • Closing Exhibitions: Kehinde Wiley & Fauvism at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston | Wednesday, May 22 to Monday, May 27 – Two exhibitions enter their final days this week at MFAH. In Archaeology of Silence, the vibrant monumental paintings and new sculptures from contemporary artist Kehinde Wiley mark one of the museum’s most exciting exhibitions in recent years. And in Vertigo of Color, the works of Henri Matisse and André Derain trace the origins of the boldly inventive style of Fauvism. Both exhibitions close out on Memorial Day, May 27. $24; free for ages 12 and under. $10 on Thursdays. Times vary.
  • Dancin’ in the Street: Motown & More Revue at Miller Outdoor Theatre | Thursday, May 23 to Saturday, May 25 | FREE –Groove to the Motown sounds of Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Tina Turner and the best classics of the ’60s through ’90s. 8:15pm.
  • Apollo Chamber Players presents Muted at Rice University | Friday, May 24 – Critically and internationally acclaimed, the Apollo Chamber players close out their season with a concert comprised of three works for string ensembles, including the world premiere commission Forgotten Dutch Melodies by Netherlands-based composer Joey Roukens. $35; $10 for students with ID. Q&A at 7pm; concert at 7:30pm.

  • Comicpalooza at George R. Brown Convention Center | Friday, May 24 to Sunday, May 26 – Get decked out in your favorite hero costume and head Downtown for a weekend of cosplay, autographs, and all-things-comics. Enjoy family-friendly activities, listen in on live panel discussions, shop from local creators, browse pop culture memorabilia, and much more. Single day passes range from $43 to $64, depending on day; weekend passes start at $90. Times vary.
  • Market Square Park Farmers Market in Downtown | Saturday, May 25 | FREE – Shop for produce, baked goods, artisan-made products and more in the heart of Downtown at this final spring market that brings vendors from around the region to the Bayou City. Family- and pet-friendly, the market also offers live music performances by local artists on the Turnip the Beet stage. 10am to 2pm.
  • 45th Annual Pan African Cultural Festival at S.H.A.P.E. Community Center | Saturday, May 25 | FREE – Join the S.H.A.P.E. Community Center in Third Ward for a day filled with vibrant performances, delicious food, art from across the African diaspora, and the celebration of Pan African culture. 11am to 5pm. 
  • Market in the Garden at B-52 Brewing | Saturday, May 25 | No Cover – This first-time market brings a slate of artisan vendors into the shade of the Conroe brewery’s towering trees. Browse handcrafted goods while you sip on suds direct from the tap. Noon to 5pm.
  • Adult Owl Prowl at Houston Arboretum & Nature Center | Saturday, May 25 – The final owl prowl of the season offers an up-close encounter with live owl ambassadors, plus nighttime trail hikes and light snacks, Saint Arnold’s beer, coffee and hot chocolate. Ages 16 and up. $50. 7pm to 9pm.

  • Pawtraits for a Cause at Axelrad | Sunday, May 26 – Two years since it was last held, this event creates a beautiful family portrait of your furry bestie. Head over with your pet (on a leash), and help raise funds for Heart of the Underdog. $35. Noon to 4pm.  
  • Black Queer Book Fair & Day Party at Kindred Stories | Sunday, May 26 | FREE –Kick off Pride festivities at this inaugural event welcoming the LGBTQIA+ community with authors, books and more at the Third Ward book shop. 1pm to 5pm.
  • Jazzy Sundays: Cécile McLorin Salvant in Concert at Discovery Green | Sunday, May 26 | FREE – Lose yourself in the passionate music of the award-winning jazz artist who bridges musical genres at another edition of Jazzy Sundays in Downtown. 5pm.
  • USPA Congressional Cup at Houston Polo Club | Sunday, May 26 – Enjoy a big day of horse polo with all the bells and whistles, including a polo trivia contest, player parade, champagne divot stomp and trophy presentation. $18 and up. 5pm. 
  • Tomorrow X Together in Concert at Minute Maid Park | Sunday, May 26 – The immensely popular K-Pop band has been building their hit list since 2019, and is set to deliver some of their latest material, including the theme of the 2024 anime television series, Solo Leveling. $49.50 and up. 7:30pm.
