Enjoy a weekend of cultural immersion at the free grand opening of Explore Asia at Asia Society Texas Center from Friday, July 21 to Sunday, July 23, 2023.

This July, the new Explore Asia exhibition pulls through the Museum District, inviting visitors to board a virtual bullet train and learn about five Asian countries across six unique learning experiences.

An exhibition several years in the making, Explore Asia sends visitors on a journey through the art, food and cultures of China, India, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam, while highlighting these communities that can be found in Houston and across the broader United States.

The immersive exhibition will be open for free to the public during a grand opening weekend celebration, allowing guests a chance to check out the new permanent installation while taking in lion dances, delicious treats, and family-friendly activities.

Connecting Asian Cultures to Houston

The Explore Asia exhibition is the result of several years of research and collaboration among scholars and community partners, helping visitors to explore the further reaches of the globe while firmly connecting the cultures of Asia with Houston’s own communities.

Building on Asia Society’s belief in the power of art, dialogue and ideas to help combat bias and build a more inclusive society, Explore Asia highlights the interconnectedness between the people of Asia, Houston and the United States with a virtual journey of Asian art, vibrant cultural cuisines (and where to find them here), and diverse perspectives.

But this is just the beginning, as Explore Asia will continue to evolve over time and celebrate even more cultures and experiences from the Asian continent.

Grand Opening Weekend Festivities

Across the grand opening weekend, visitors to Asia Society Texas Center will get a first look at the new exhibition alongside three days of family fun and immersive cultural experiences.

Each day features a lion dance to kick off activities, along with an interactive Performances Across Asia drumming experience ($6), and delicious treats from visiting food trucks like Coffee-Q and Foreign Policy.

Asia Society Texas will also host community partners for a day of creative activities and games on Saturday, as well as hourly story times on Sunday that highlight tales from featured countries in Explore Asia.
