For more than 40 years, May brings with it an opportunity to explore vibrant cultures and histories throughout Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

There’s no shortage of ways to celebrate APAH Month and to highlight that fact, Asia Society Texas Center in the Museum District offers a daily slate of events, ideas, and inspirations across May that elevate the personal stories, contributions and experiences of Asian and Asian American communities.

Some of the month’s featured programs can be found below, but you can dig deeper into the month-long schedule that features in-person festivals, talks and tours, on-demand programming, programs and exhibits at partner destinations in the community, commentary on Asian influences and appropriations in Star Wars, and other resources that can help you explore and enjoy APAH Month from anywhere.

Live APAH Month Programming Highlights at Asia Society Texas Center

  • Summoning Memories: Art Beyond Chinese Traditions | Daily | FREE – Throughout the month of May, Asia Society Texas’ art exhibition will be open for free admission to all. The exhibition highlights works by over 30 contemporary artists of Chinese descent who reinterpret traditions in dynamic and innovative ways, using experimentation to draw on both Eastern and Western art-making practices and materials.
  • Celebrating Incredible India! | Sunday, May 7, 2023 – Mark the 75th anniversary of India’s independence with an evening of fashion, dance, and food, complete with a fashion show, performances by Anjali Center for Performing Arts and Rhythm India, and more. $15; $9.75 for members. 4pm to 6pm.
  • Pianist Eunbi Kim in Concert | Thursday, May 11, 2023 – Take in an immersive multimedia performance by pianist Eunbi Kim as she creates a soundworld of classical music threaded with an indie-pop awareness in it feels like a dream. $25; $16.25 for members. 7:30pm.
  • BIPOC Book Fest | Saturday, May 13, 2023 – Celebrate underrepresented voices throughBIPOC Book Fest’s showcase of literary works, panels, and workshops celebrating Black, Indigenous, people of color, and other creatives. $5. 10am to 6pm.
  • Bank of America Women’s Leadership Series: Houston’s Leading News Anchors | Thursday, May 18, 2023 – Notable Houston women news anchors—Melanie Lawson, Pooja Lodhia, and Rekha Muddaraj—discuss the joys and challenges of being female journalists and news anchors of color. $50; $32.50 for members. 6pm.
  • Symposium: Summoning Traditions: Art Beyond Chinese Traditions | Friday, May 19, 2023 | FREE with RSVP – Explore the cultural, historical, and artistic themes in the Summoning Memories exhibition at a free day of activities including a gallery tour, panel discussions, and a keynote presentation by guest curator, Dr. Susan L. Beningson. Advance registration required. 9am to 6pm.
  • Members-Only Reception & Tour of Summoning Memories: Art Beyond Chinese Traditions | FREE – Asia Society Texas members are invited to an exclusive reception celebrating Summing Memories, with light bites and wine, conversation and a docent-led gallery tour. 6pm.
