Top Performing Arts Openings This Week: January 30 to February 5, 2023

  • Haydn and His Czech Colleagues at Czech Center Museum Houston | Monday, January 30 – Harmonia Stellarum Houston performs a series of works by Joseph Haydn, Josef Antonín Štěpán and Leopold Koželuh. Light refreshments will be served beginning at 6pm. $50. 6:30pm.
  • TUTS presents Chicago at Hobby Center | Tuesday, January 31 | Ongoing – A shrewd commentary on murder and celebrity, this multi-award–winning musical is among Broadway’s most beloved. See for yourself why it’s still going strong on the Great White Way…and all that jazz. This production runs through Sunday, February 12. $40 and up. Showtimes vary.
  • A.D. Players presents Every Brilliant Thing at the George Theater | Wednesday, February 1 | Ongoing – When he was seven years old, the mother of this play’s protagonist attempted suicide, prompting him to make a list of everything worth living for. An examination of mental illness, love, and the power of joy and forgiveness, it’s a show that offers hope to all. This productions runs through Sunday, February 19. $36 and up. Showtimes vary.
  • A Number at Rec Room Arts | Thursday, February 2 | Ongoing – This psychological thriller explores parenthood, genetic experiments, and the debate over nature and nurture. Find out why this “devastating drama” (Time Out London) has “the power to provoke.” (The Guardian). This production rungs through Saturday, February 25. $40; $30 for ages 30 and under. 7:30pm.
  • Shepherd School Chamber Players at Rice University Stude Concert Hall | Friday, February 3 | FREE – The student ensemble performs works including Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in B-flat Major, K. 191, Wynton Marsalis’ A Fiddler’s Tale and more. Free with registration. 7:30pm.
  • Open Dance Project presents Peter & Wendy at MATCH | Friday, February 3 | Ongoing – The music of Two Star Symphony blends with Open Dance Project’s signature artistry and athleticism in a whimsical, brand new take on the classic story of the Boy Who Never Grew Up. This production runs through Saturday, February 11. $35. Showtimes vary.
  • ROCO presents A House of My Own at Rienzi | Saturday, February 4 – The chamber orchestra performs in the ballroom at MFAH’s European Decorative Arts house, featuring the world premiere of songs by ROCO composer-in-residence Derek Bermel and author Sandra Cisneros, based on her novel, The House on Mango Street. $45. 5pm to 7:30pm.
  • Houston Chamber Choir presents Mass for the Endangered at the Church of St. John the Divine | Saturday, February 4 – New instrumental group Loop38 joins the choir for this work by composer Sarah Kirkland Snider, praised by the Los Angeles Times for her “culturally electric new music,” which serves as a call to awareness of the natural world. $40. 7:30pm.
