Catch our picks for the latest exhibitions and installations at art galleries and museums throughout Greater Houston in August 2022.

This month, summer exhibitions are in high gear across Houston, and we’ve selected a handful that you should put on your radar.

Even more, all of our picks this month are free admission, so don’t miss your chance to check them out before they’re gone.

Top Exhibitions in Houston This Month: August 2022

The Big Show 2022 at Lawndale Art Center

Lawndale’s annual show that features only artists practicing within 100 miles wraps up its final weeks of exhibition in the Museum District.

Always one of Houston’s signature art events of the year, you can check out 2022’s edition, which juror Daisy Nam curated down to 38 artists from more than 500 submissions. Works on display reflect our geographical surroundings, urban infrastructure, landscape, dreams, fantasy, imagination, play and desire.

On display through Saturday, August 13, 2022.

Artists On Site: Series 3 at Asia Society Texas Center

The third installment of the drop-in studio series features the work of artists Ruhee Maknojia, Matt Manalo, Luisa Duarte and Lanecia Rouse Tinsley, who are given studio space at the Asia Society campus throughout the month to create works across media, including painting, sculpture, textile production, and more.

Visitors are welcome to stop by and view the work, as well as chat with the artists about their practice of artmaking.

Houston, Sie Haben Ein Problem! at Contemporary Arts Museum Houston

CAMH brings the work of Austrian artists Paul Renner and Richard Hoeck to Houston for the first major solo exhibition of the artists in the United States.

Together, the artists present a series of art objects and experiences that bring visitors together, while playing with unconventional ideas about food, humor, performance art, and the potential inherent in coming together for a meal.

Labyrinth by Reginald C. Adams at Discovery Green

Part of a global series of installations, Houston-based artist Reginald C. Adams has constructed a labyrinth of flowering plants within Discovery Green, for visitors to explore by winding through the paths.

The artwork is intended to help participating individuals connect with the earth that we walk on through meditation and reflection.

On display through Labor Day, Monday, September 5, 2022.

A Dressing the Future & Made to Last at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft

Two exhibitions are nearing their close at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft:

In A Dressing the Future: The Ecofiction of Nicole Dextras, set and costume designs that are plant-based, as well as other props, models and set components are put on display from environmental artist Nicole Dextras’ dystopian film trilogy, A Dressing the Future.

And in Made to Last: The Legacy of the Jubilee Quilt Circle, the exhibition features a selection of quilts made by current and founding members of the Community Artists’ Collective, that draws from the quilting traditions and narratives of the African American community.

2022 Summer Studios Residency at Project Row Houses

Eight local student artists unveil the work they’ve produced during a July residency at Project Row Houses, intended to ignite dialogues and help members of the community to see themselves and others differently.

The 2022 Summer Studios artists include Niara Dorsey, Christopher Crooke, Dranat Vazquez, Aaliyah Norfleet, Ramond Burgos, Tony Rincon, Liz Hayes, and Carlos Mendoza.

On display through Sunday, September 11, 2022.

Samuel Fosso: African Spirits at the Menil Collection

The African Spirits series features 14 large-scale gelatin silver photographs that portray the artist, Samuel Fosso, as prominent figures of the 20th century Black liberation movements, including Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., Patrice Lumumba, Angela Davis, and others.

While portraying these figures from iconic images, the Cameroon-born artist pays homage while also raising questions about individuality, celebrity, the media and the history of representation.

On display Friday, August 5 through Sunday, January 15, 2023.
