Experience one of the most beautiful duets in opera with The Pearl Fishers at the Wortham Theater Center on select dates from Friday, January 25 through Friday, February 8, 2019.

The second offering of Houston Grand Opera’s winter repertoire, Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers is a rarely seen gem that brims with musical beauty heightened by its captivating, colorful set design.

Twelve years before he crafted his masterpiece, Carmen, French composer Georges Bizet scored this tale of two best friends driven to conflict by the arrival of a priestess to bless the pearl harvest. The resulting romantic love triangle leads to dramatic consequences as each deals with the complicated dilemma.

The Pearl Fishers’ prominent duo

World-renowned stars Mariusz Kwiecień and Lawrence Brownlee take the helm as the titular characters to perform the Pearl Fishers duet, one of the most famous and beautiful duets in opera.

One of the leading baritones in opera today, Kwiecień has performed in prestigious theaters around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, The Royal Opera, Paris Opera, Vienna State Opera, and many other major opera houses. He is known for his award-winning voice, incisive musicianship, and enthralling stage presence.

The other half of the Pearl Fishers duet is assumed by Brownlee, the American-born tenor who has garnered acclaim, including being named the 2017 “Male Singer of the Year” by both the International Opera Awards and Bachtrack. Hailed by the Guardian as “one of the world’s leading bel canto stars,” Brownlee joins with Kwiecień for a performance of exceptional quality.

The Pearl Fisher is appropriate for all ages and lasts 2 hours and 15 minutes, including one intermission. It will be sung in French with projected English translation.
