About Jean Lafitte

The name and deeds of Jean Lafitte loom large in the early chronicles of Texas. His one-time base of operations on Galveston Island permitted him a chance to sail up and down the coast, embarking on different pirate exploits.

One of those escapades has a legend rooted in La Porte. According to the tale, Lafitte and two henchmen unloaded a heavy chest and buried it safely off what is now Bay Ridge.

If the legend holds true, the pirate treasure still remains buried and undisturbed. Though no historical records exist of it being unearthed, you might find a few gold coins floating in the bay waters from time to time.
