In our Park Spotlight series, we take a closer look at Houston’s vast array of public recreational areas to shine a light on hidden and not so hidden gems. This week we’ll be spotlighting George Ranch Historical Park. Join us as we take a trip through Houston, park by park.

Located just 30 miles southwest of Downtown in Richmond, TX, this 23,000-acre park showcases more than 100 years of Texas history and, notably, is one of the states oldest ranches.

Establish in 1824, the Historical Park is an internationally-recognized living history site that authentically preserves and interprets the four-generational storyline of a Texas family beginning in 1824 and spanning a century.

Featuring historic homes, demonstrations of life from frontier Texas to World War II, costumed interpreters and livestock, the park, which is set on a real ranch, aims to educate people of all ages about Texas history and the region’s unique heritage through programming that connects and inspires learners of all ages.

A Living History Site

Visitors can ponder the timeless story of a multi-generational family while watching interpreters recreate conversations and chores at the 1830s Jones Stock Farm, learning about life in post-Civil War Texas at the 1860s Ryon Prairie Home, experiencing the waning days of the 19th century at the 1890s Davis Victorian Complex, exploring the home and barns of the 1930s George Cattle Complex, and taking a walk along the serene half-mile Heritage Trail.

Through informal experiences, including the park’s Historic Food Program, Texian Market Days, monthly/seasonal events, and cattle demonstrations from cowboys, George Ranch provides an environment that allows guests a truly immersive view of history.

The charming, rustic, and historical facilities are even available to rent for both indoor and outdoor events, including a 63,000-square-foot arena, a 1911 dancehall, and beautiful outdoor spaces.
