Update 6/11/20: Américas is permanently closed.
Experience the bold flavors of what’s best described as “Pan Latin” cuisine of Central and South America for lunch, dinner, happy hour, and Sunday brunch, at Américas River Oaks courtesy of culinary talents of Houston’s Cordúa family.
Created by Nicaragua-born chef Michael Cordúa, who opened his first Houston restaurant back in 1988, Américas is the chicest feather in the cap of the Cordúa Restaurants group (which also includes Churrascos, Amazón Grill, and Artista).
Américas River Oaks
Featuring both classic and new culinary creations, Américas’ menu was crafted under the direction of passionate executive chef David Cordúa (son of the restaurant dynasty’s founder).
Nestled in the two-story River Oaks Shopping Center, across from River Oaks Theater on West Gray, Américas is a sexy, visual stunner.
Designed by award-winning Chicago-based architect Jordan Mozer, the restaurant featuries voluptuous, over-sized booths and red décor, with a large, enveloping bar and lounge area placed front and center.
Expect business deals or ladies who lunch during the day and inner-loop daters and fun groups on evenings and weekends.
Delectable Lunch Bargain
There’s a three-course lunch trio special for just $19.95 at lunch that serves as a great introduction to the cuisine that borrows from the flavors of Nicaragua, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Colombia.
Start with salad or soup of the day followed by a number of delicious entrée choices, like the fantastic pollo encamisado, featuring plaintain-crusted chicken, roasted tomato, seared panela cheese, topped with a puree of spicy-smoky black bean sauce, and crema fresca, followed by their famous tres leches or an espresso for dessert.
One of Houston’s Best Happy Hours
Every day from 4pm until 7pm, and all day on Thursday, Américas offers one of the best happy hours in the city, with an incredible array of small plates, cocktails, wine and beer at special prices at the bar, in the lounge, and on the patio over looking River Oaks (perfect for Springtime weather).
Don’t miss the addictive Angel Wings – little “Frenched” chicken wings (meaning it’s just a single bite, off of one bone) – delicately spiced and served with brown butter, habanero-papaya and blue cheese sauces or the ahi tuna ceviche, with coconut, peanut, jalapeno and cilantro – both just $5.95, or the churrasquitos – chimichurri-grilled beef filet with bernaise, pickled onion and yucca fries for just $7.95.
Select wines by the glass and cocktails like the Cappirinha or Mojito are just $5.95, with additional bargains like select bottles of wine for just $29.95
Over-the-Top Sunday Brunch Buffet
Featuring everything from smoked salmon and ceviche to whole roasted pig, empanadas, made-to-order omeletes and crepes alongside frito mixto (plaintain-crusted shrimp, calamari and fried jalapenos) and not-so-typical takes on waffles, pancakes and French toast torrejas.
With desserts like Tequila bread pudding and Delirio de Chocolate amongst a huge variety of other offerings, this expansive brunch buffet rivals any other in Houston.
There’s certainly nothing like it in terms of flavor and service is typically a winner as well at this Houston gem that should never be taken for granted.
