Celebrate Houston Taiwanese Heritage Week at the stunning Taiwan So Beautiful

Catch an exclusive dance program staged by an acclaimed Taiwanese dance troupe at The Culture Center of TECO in West Houston on Friday evening, May 13, 2016.

In their Houston debut, Taiwan’s beloved MAD Theater (Modern Arts Dance Theater) will stage Taiwan So Beautiful, a production that expertly traces the country’s history and connects it to the modern day.

Celebrated around the globe for its clever choreography and innovative storytelling, MAD Theater combines traditional Taiwanese elements with modern sensibilities and influences.

Taiwan So Beautiful

Structured around Taiwanese folk songs known as “flowers,” the show builds and expands to the depict the country as it is today. Along the way, it illustrates the many rich cultures and influences that have shaped modern Taiwan.

Beyond classic music and costumes, the show integrates an unexpected array of elements into the production, including puppetry, Taiwanese opera, comedy, fashion, rap, rock and roll, jazz, multimedia elements, and more.

Taiwan’s MAD Theater

Since its founding in 1997 by Shih Gee-Tze, MAD Theater has continued to stage challenging original works each year. In doing so, the troupe has significantly expanded the definition and style of contemporary Asian dance in Taiwan.

Beyond its Taiwanese borders, the dance group has delighted audiences in the United States, France, Malaysia, Australia, and Russia.

About Houston Taiwanese-Heritage-Week

Beginning on the date of the show, Friday, May 13, 2016, Houston Taiwanese-Heritage-Week will highlight the culture and heritage of Taiwanese Americans. Its mission is to unite the Taiwanese-American community through a celebration of their native land’s traditions and modern day cultures.

The week has been organized by numerous Taiwanese American community organizations, including Overseas Community Affairs Council and other departments of TECO in Houston, FAPA: Formosan Association for Public Affairs, Hakka Association of Houston, Taiwanese American Institute, Taiwanese Association of America- Houston Chapter, Taiwan Environment Information Society of Houston, Taiwan Hotel & Motel Association of Greater Houston, Houston Taiwan Institute for Senior Citizens, and Taiwan Society of Houston.
