The cannabis culture holiday of 4/20 offers plenty of buzz-worthy events this week, but don’t forget to celebrate the Queen of Tejano’s birthday, check out a psych-fueled music fest in Galveston, and get down to all things Prince in Third Ward.

  • TUTS presents The Cher Show at Hobby Center | Tuesday to Sunday | Ongoing – Called “slyly fabulous” by the Hollywood Reporter, this show examines the life of the incomparable Cher, who’s dominated music, movies and more across her six-decade career. Bonus: every one of those iconic Bob Mackie outfits are recreated for the stage. $40 and up. Showtimes vary.
  • Tay Butler: A Friendly Game of Basketball at Lawndale Art Center | Thursday to Saturday | Ongoing | FREE – This solo multi-media exhibition presents Butler’s research of, and art engagement with, basketball’s racial history and contemporary anti-Black issues. Through installation, painting, drawing, photography, collage, music and performance, Butler creates a multi-sensory environment which mirrors basketball’s pre-, post- and in-game play. 11am to 5pm.
  • Houston Art Gallery Associations’ Spring Celebration & Open Galleries at Multiple Locations | Friday & Saturday | FREE – For two days, visitors can explore 16 member galleries of the Houston Art Gallery Association, touring curated artworks and exploring distinct facets of contemporary art across the city. Noon to 5pm.
  • Comedian Anthony DeVito at the Riot Comedy Club | Friday & Saturday – With appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Comedy Central Stand Up Presents, the New Jersey native blends New York City club-style comedy with storytelling and punchy standup. He’s in Houston for three shows across back-to-back nights. $20 and up. Times vary.
  • Montgomery County Fair & Rodeo at Montgomery County Fairgrounds | Friday to Sunday – It’s a whirlwind of all things rodeo, with an entire closing weekend of fun, including a bbq cookoff, carnival rides, concerts, family attractions, a classic car show and much more. $10 and up; $5 for ages 5 to 11; free for ages 4 and under. Times vary.
  • The Garden Theatre presents Reefer Madness at MATCH | Friday to Sunday | Ongoing – With lyrics by Kevin Murphy and music by Dan Studney, this musical is based on the 1936 exploitation film, originally titled Tell Your Children. It follows the exploits of a high school drama group telling the story of Jimmy, a fine and upstanding All-American boy whose life fell apart because of the evil reefer. Expect satire and hilarity. And yes, of course, there are performances on 4/20. $28. Showtimes vary.

  • Uchi Collab Dinner at Navy Blue – Chef Jerrod Zifchak of Navy Blue and Chef Stephen Conklin of Uchi come together for a one-night-only culinary collaboration – a combination of Uchi’s innovative Japanese flavors and Navy Blue’s fruits de mer. $225 per person. 7pm.

  • Selena Movie Screening at Rooftop Cinema Club Uptown – Take in a screening of the 1997 classic biopic that traces Selena’s rise to stardom with an outdoor, rooftop movie screening in Uptown. Swing by early and enjoy a live DJ and dancing before the film. Ages 21 and up. $29 and up. 5:30pm; screening at 7:30pm.
  • Pint-Sized Science at North Shepherd Brewing | FREE – Come through the Garden Oaks area for a casual discussion with experts and scientists about the use of sensory technology to help mitigate natural and human-induced hazards in our increasingly interconnected world. 6:30pm.
  • Trivia: Taylor Swift at Under the Radar Brewery | No Cover – Anticipate the drop of The Tortured Poets Department with fellow Swifties at a night of trivia in Third Ward. Prizes will be handed out for trivia winners and best dressed. 7:30pm.
  • Metalachi in Concert at Main Street Crossing – The heavy metal Mariachi band brings their distinct brand of music to the Tomball stage. $40 and up. 8pm.

  • ZaZa’s Cocktail Showdown: Botanical Edition at Hotel ZaZa Memorial City – Houston’s top bartenders go head-to-head to claim the title for the best floral spring cocktail creation. Sample a variety of delicious cocktails, enjoy live music, light bites and a lively atmosphere. Ages 21 and up. $40. 6pm to 8pm.
  • Studio Menil presents Alphabet Soup at Richmond Hall – This creatively themed, annual spring party includes colorful cocktails, amusing hors d’oeuvres and an artfully presented seated dinner, all accompanied by live music. The fundraiser directly supports the Menil’s programming. $1,250 and up. 7pm to 11:30pm.
  • Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears in Concert at Main Street Crossing – The Tomball stage hosts a night of blues jams from guitarist and singer-songwriter Black Joe Lewis, backed by the Honeybears.$40 and up. 8pm.
  • The Tortured Poets Department Listening Party at McIntyre’s Downtown – DJs will play the entirety of Taylor Swift’s new record alongside the rest of her discography and some other pop bangers. Expect tasty Taylor-inspired cocktails and performances from favorite local drag queens. Dressing up and sharing friendship bracelets are highly encouraged. $17. 9pm.
  • Bigfoot Rave at Warehouse Live Midtown – Come dressed as a bigfoot, fairy, alien or whatever else you believe in at this costume-themed dance party in Midtown. $15. 9pm.
  • Girls on Deck at Bauhaus – Come out and show your love for some girl power as a slate of all-female DJs showcase their house and techno talents. There will be music in the lounge and on the patio, with Danielle Simeon, Madison Parks, Honey T, Leilani and more providing the tunes all night long. $15. 10pm.

  • 420 Pre-Party at Spindletap Brewery | FREE – Kick off the culture’s holiday with a pre-party at the North Houston brewery. The Urban Flower Company sets ups a bash with live DJs, a puff-and-paint session, giveaways, and great vibes. 4pm to 10pm.
  • Spring Music Series: Nick & the Hits at Chapman & Kirby | FREE – Dance the night away in the heart of EaDo to the pop, rock, funk and soul hits performed by the crowd pleasing, high energy Houston group. The show is part of Chapman & Kirby’s new weekly Spring Music Series on Friday nights. 6pm to 11pm.
  • The Murder Mystery Co. presents Best Laid Plans at Pinstripes – The Upper Kirby spot hosts an interactive comedic murder mystery where you’ll play alongside professional actors to solve the crime–or not. Lasting two-and-a-half hours, the 1930s Hollywood whodunnit throws guests into a night of mystery, intrigue and murder. $49. 7pm.
  • Afroman in Concert at Last Concert Cafe – The rapper best known for his single, “Because I Got High” takes the stage in the Warehouse District, immediately north of Downtown, for a pre-4/20 show. $30 and up. 7pm.
  • Tomar & the FCs’ Backyard Bash in Concert at the Continental Club – The high energy group brings deep soul and funk grooves to the backyard stage at the Mid-Main spot. $10 and up. 7pm to 10pm.
  • Lego Night Out at Houston Toy Museum – Join other Lego enthusiasts for this evening of connection and building. Choose from more than 10 different LEGO sets of different price points. Adults only. $10. 7pm to 10pm.
  • Up In Smoke Psychedelic Art Show at Bad Astronaut Brewing | FREE – Celebrate 4/20 Day with a psychedelic art showcase, a black light graffiti battle, a vendor market, live DJs and more. Bring along friends to sample the brewery’s offerings and chill out as you kick off the weekend. 7pm to 11pm.

  • Final Boss: Buds & Brews at Eureka Heights Brewery | FREE – The Heights brewery celebrates 4/20 with an all-day bash, kicking off with vinyl and free donuts, plus a kolache pop-up with Deckle and Hide. Later in the day, shop local goods at a marketplace, enjoy free pinball, and catch an evening screening of Pineapple Express. 10am to 10pm.
  • Canna Fest HTX at J-Bar-M Barbecue | FREE – In EaDo, the barbecue joint celebrates cannabis with more than 40 local vendors doling out smoke accessories, clothing, vintage, art and more. Live DJs will be on hand to provide the vibe, and you can dig into delicious tastes of smokey ‘cue. Noon to 6pm.
  • Southern Smoke Decanted at the Historic Eldorado Ballroom– Wine fans can enjoy a vintners’ tasting reception featuring more than 40 specially chosen wineries from across the globe, with gourmet bites from top local chefs including Hamsa’s Yotam Dolev, Victoria Elizondo of Cochinita & Co. and more. The afternoon will culminate in a seated live auction, including guided pours at each table from select winemakers or sommeliers, and chef’s tastings. $500. 1pm to 5pm.
  • 2nd Annual Hoppy Drafts & Earthy Crafts Fest at Galveston Island Brewing | FREE – At the beloved brewery just blocks from the beach, you can celebrate Earth Day with drafts and crafts, food trucks, eco-friendly vendors and more. The event happens before and leads into the Third Eyeland Party later in the evening. 2pm to 8pm.
  • Karbach Reggae Fest at Karbach Brewing Company | FREE – The Spring Branch brewery hosts a family-friendly Reggae Fest with a day of good vibes, local vendors, and music by artists like Mellow Mood, Dem Roots, the Katastrophics, Soulfiya, and more. 2pm to 11pm.
  • Houston Whiskey Riot 2023 at Post Houston – Sip and sample your way through more than 200 whiskies, taste inventive whiskey cocktails, meet master distillers and bring home a special tasting glass at this Downtown festival for all things whiskey. $90 and up. 4pm to 7pm.
  • 4/20 Party at 8th Wonder Brewery | No Cover – Catch live music from Marley Moon, Dollar Disco, the Stevie Clear Experience and DJ G-Funk at this afternoon bash in EaDo. 8th Wonder will serve up their THC-infused drinks and tasty brews, Clutch City Crawfish will sling some mudbugs, and you can join the vibe with a laser show, fire breathers, stilt walkers, face painters and more. 4pm to 10pm.
  • Third Eyeland Party ’24 at Galveston Island Brewing – This popular event returns to Galveston Island Brewing for the fifth year, with two stages of live music, light show visuals, art installations, a vendor market, food pop-ups, and other fun. $30. 4pm to 10pm.
  • Black & White Art Show 8.0 at the Hardy & Nance Studios | FREE – This special art show returns, featuring artwork that only utilizes black and white. Saint Arnold will provide free beverages and you can grab grub from Rich Boy Po’Boy. 5pm to 9pm.
  • 23rd Annual Noche Caliente with David Sánchez at Miller Outdoor Theatre | FREE – Come out to Hermann Park for an incredible evening of music celebrating the different cultures of the Hispanic community. David Sánchez is recognized around the world as one of the finest saxophonists of his generation. His mastery of the instrument is undeniable, and his sound is unmistakable. 8:15pm.
  • Broadway Rave at White Oak Music Hall – Musical theater lovers can unite to sing along and dance to Broadway music. Expect an evening of favorites and soon-to-be faves celebrating the music of the Great White Way across the decades. $15. 9pm.

  • Lucille’s presents Prince Day Market & Concert at the Historic Eldorado Ballroom – Celebrating the iconic musician, this day of activities includes a market with local vendors offering a variety of goods, along with a Prince tribute concert in the afternoon. The market is free to attend; concert tickets are $35 and up. Noon to 7pm.
  • Brews & Browse Market at Urban South HTX | FREE – The Arts District brewery offers a chance to shop an assortment of local vendors along with family fun like a bounce house, face painting and raffle prizes while you sip on tasty brewed concoctions. 1pm to 6pm.
  • Punk Rock Garage Sale at Bad Astronaut Brewing | No Cover – The Northside brewery hosts another installment of the monthly market series that offers the chance to shop more than 50 vendors doling out vintage wear, music gear, art, collectibles and much more. Stick around and enjoy games like pool, foosball, air hockey and other fun. 2pm to 6pm.
  • Douglas Elliman Classic at Houston Polo Club – With prizes from Douglas Elliman real estate, a costume contest and more, this is a great time to come out to the polo grounds. Enjoy a player parade, live music, expert announcing, champagne divot stomp at halftime and special trophy presentation. The Lymbar is the onsite concession, serving delicious menu choices and a premium bar menu. $18 and up. 5pm.
  • Jazzy Sundays at Buffalo Bayou Park | FREE – R&D Lab takes over the Water Works stage with Lolade for the third of four Jazzy Sundays installments at Buffalo Bayou Park. 5pm to 7pm.
