Make the most of your week with our top festivals, events, and things to do this week in Houston from Monday, March 18 to Sunday, March 24, 2024.

This week opens the spring festival season with plenty of signature events to check out through the week.

The Houston Dash return to the pitch on the weekend, the Latino Film Festival kicks off, and Saturday brings many cultural fests to spots across Greater Houston.

  • Devendra Banhart at White Oak Music Hall | Tuesday, March 19 – Houston-born citizen of the world, the freak-folk artist Devendra Banhart returns to his hometown in celebration of his eleventh studio album, Flying Wig. Kat Bollinger supports. $30 and up. 7pm.
  • Comedian Jim Gaffigan at Smart Financial Centre | Wednesday, March 20 – The renowned deadpan comedian returns to Sugar Land following up a series of sold-out shows in recent years. $41 and up. 7:30pm.
  • Scarface in Concert at Warehouse Live Midtown | Wednesday, March 20 – After a stunning performance on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, Houston OG rap icon Scarface takes the stage in Midtown for a Behind the Desk Experience show. $49.50 and up. 8pm.
  • 8th Houston Latino Film Festival at MATCH | Wednesday, March 20 to Sunday, March 24 – The annual film festival promoting Latino culture among Latinos and other communities has culled nearly 500 worldwide submissions down to an exciting festival lineup that features more than 60 short and feature-length films. Across MATCH’s several stages, the film festival will screen throughout five days, with several screenings accompanied by the filmmakers and directors in attendance. Single screenings are $14; all access passes are $60, $40 for students. Times vary.
  • Stay Tooned: A Tribute to ‘90s Cartoons at Hardy & Nance Studios | Friday, March 22 | FREE – This art show features the work of more than 40 local artists, paying tribute to the cartoons of the 1990s. Expect work inspired by an era of cartoons that so many of us grew up with and remember for their smart presentation and bizarreness. 7pm to 11pm..

  • Tomball German Heritage Festival in Old Town Tomball | Friday, March 22 to Sunday, March 24 | FREE – Tomball’s annual German Fest fills the streets with more than 200 vendors rocking antiques, arts and crafts, and more; plus cultural music, street performances, a Heritage Center, and tasty German fare, festival eats, and beer and wine. The weekend-long event is family-friendly and free to attend, with free parking and a shuttle service on Saturday and Sunday. Times vary.
  • UNICEF USA’s Heart Strings: Creating Connection to the World’s Children at Post Houston | Friday, March 22 | Ongoing – This multi-sensory exhibition, on view through April 7, invites guests of all ages to travel the globe in just 45 minutes through the universal language of music. Eight interactive zones help guests create a global, ever-evolving song and use their voices to have a lasting impact on the lives of children. $23 and up. Times vary.
  • 2nd Annual Hatchling Hustle at Babe’s Beach | Saturday, March 23 – This 5K run and one-mile fun run at Babe’s Beach in Galveston is designed to help educate the public about the endangered sea turtles of the Gulf of Mexico, and bring awareness to the upcoming sea turtle nesting season, which occurs all along the Texas Coast from April through July. $40 and up. 7am.
  • 20th Anniversary Celebration at Urban Harvest Farmers Market | Saturday, March 23 | FREE – The city’s popular farmer’s market celebrates 20 years a fest filled with family-friendly activities, like face painting, caricatures, plant giveaways, and a chef demo by James Beard Award-winning Chef Benchawan “G” Jabthong Painter of Street to Kitchen. 9am to 11am.
  • 52nd Annual Buffalo Bayou Partnership Regatta | Saturday, March 23 – The largest canoe and kayak race in Texas returns to the waters of Buffalo Bayou, sending paddlers down a 15-mile stretch from West Houston to Allen’s Landing in Downtown. Stick around as participants finish up for a post-race party with Saint Arnold brews, lunch and other celebrations. Registration is open to ages 12 and up, and does not include a canoe or kayak. $55 per person; $60 on race day. 9am to 2pm.

  • 11th Lyons Avenue Renaissance Festival in Fifth Ward | Saturday, March 23 | FREE – The 11th annual edition of this festival celebrates the history, art and culture of Houston’s Fifth Ward. Expect stages playing authentic blues, hip-hop, rock and gospel, plus down-home cooking, soul food, Creole cuisine and BBQ. This family-friendly festival also features an Easter egg drop by helicopter, where kiddos can scramble for tens of thousands of goodie-filled eggs. Noon to 5pm.
  • Texas Champions Day & Astronaut Run at Sam Houston Race Park | Saturday, March 23 – Come out and watch the best thoroughbred horses in Texas compete in seven-stakes races for more than $575,000 in purse money. Plus, everyone is welcome to sign up for the 2nd Annual Astronaut Run, where you’re encouraged to dress like an astronaut and pound some pavement. $5 and up. 1pm.
  • The Simon & Garfunkel Story at the Grand 1894 Opera House | Saturday, March 23 – This immersive concert-style theater show chronicles the amazing journey shared by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. Relive all your favorites, such as “Mrs. Robinson,” “Cecilia,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Homeward Bound,” “The Sound of Silence” and others. $38 and up. 3pm.
  • Opening Day: Houston Dash vs. Racing Louisville FC at Shell Energy Stadium | Saturday, March 23 – The women of the Houston Dash return to celebrate their 10th season in the city, facing off against RLFC on the EaDo pitch in their home opener. $12 and up. 7:30pm.
  • Katy Home & Garden Show and Barndo Expo at the Katy ISD Ag Center | Saturday, March 23 & Sunday, March 24 – DIYers and professionals alike will find something to discover at this expo dedicated to home improvement, decorating and interior design, landscapes, and outdoor entertainment. Come ready to be inspired to transform your space. $9; free for ages 12 and under. Times vary.

  • Bayou City Art Festival in Downtown Houston | Saturday, March 23 & Sunday, March 24 – Houston’s iconic art festival returns this spring with artwork from more than 250 artists across 19 different categories, all on display for festival goers to browse and take home. The weekend festival will also showcase two entertainment stages, a food truck park, culinary stages, beverage stations and more. $18; free for ages 12 and under. 10am to 6pm.
  • Ghibli Fest Art Market at Karbach Brewing Co. | Saturday, March 23 & Sunday, March 24 | No Cover – More than 30 artists unveil their creations inspired by every Miyazaki film, from the magical world of Spirited Away to the whimsical adventures of My Neighbor Totoro. It’s a chance to see unique works and talk with the artists who created them. Saturday 11am to 8pm; Sunday 11am to 6pm.
  • Holi Festival at Hindu Temple of the Woodlands | Sunday, March 24 | FREE – Celebrate Holi with an afternoon of free family fun in The Woodlands. The Hindu Temple there will host a colorful bash with live music and dancing, food vendors, and a Holi color run. Packets of color and water guns will be available for purchase. 11am to 3pm.
  • 15th Annual Nowruz Festival at Bayou City Event Center| Sunday, March 24 – This annual festival from the Iranian Cultural Foundation features a live concert by Iranian vocalist Kamyar, plus Persian folkloric dances and other festive fun. $30 and up; free for ages 9 and under. 3pm to 9pm.
  • Caetano Veloso in Concert at Hobby Center | Sunday, March 24 – The Brazilian superstar and winner of 13 Latin Grammys and two Grammy Awards makes his Houston debut. This concert draws from his current album, Meu Coco, along with songs from throughout his storied career. $45 and up. 7pm.
