Marvel at the eye-opening sights and fierce music of Passing Strange at Obsidian Theater from Thursday, February 9 through Saturday, March 4, 2017.

The Tony and Drama Desk award-winning rock musical, presented by Obsidian Theater in association with SRO Productions, tells the story of Youth (played by David Allen III) uneasy relationship with his life and his journey toward self-discovery.

Directed by Vance Johnson and produced by Rachel Landon and Tom Stell, this beautifully written and fierce musical, complete with an on-stage rock band, finds our hero, a would-be songwriter living in a middle-class Los Angeles neighborhood, stewing in a sea of conflicted cultural signals.

With book and lyrics by Michael “Stew” Stewart and music by Heidi Rodewald and Stew, Passing Strange will run Thursday, February 9 through Saturday, March 4 at Obsidian Theater in the Heights.

Youth’s Journey

Youth chafes under his mother’s fixation on family ties, the church, and her bourgeois aspirations.

So he sets out on his own—like pioneers Josephine Baker and James Baldwin—to Europe, seeking something “real.”

Picaresque misadventures with sex, drugs, politics, and art await Youth in far-out Amsterdam and hyper-militant Berlin. His eyes are opened ever wider, even revealing what he left behind.
