Enter stage right

houston theater for kids

Splurge for theater tickets for your older child and see their excitement as the stage comes alive with stories, songs, and the talent that makes us all fall in love with the Houston theaters.

It’s no secret that we are huge fans of the Theater District here in Houston. We are home to a world-renown cultural smorgasbord of talent that grace the stages of our theaters bringing entertainment to the masses. We usually reserve our trips to the theater district for date nights and special occasions and leave the kids at home with the sitter. However, the live stage is a tremendous opportunity to try a different style of family outing for those with older children, especially those with a flair for drama. Most shows have matinees with lower ticket costs so you can experiment with a show and not feel quite as bad if you have to make an exit at intermission.

If you do have to make a quick getaway, don’t stray too far. The Downtown Houston Aquarium is within walking distance from the theater district.  After the show, the family can enjoy a loud and rambunctious dinner to burn off all that energy from sitting so quiet and still.

The holiday season is a great time for Houston theater for kids. Holiday classics, like A Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker, can be found in most of the theaters. Elf: The Musical, although not a classic (yet), is also a great option for our younger audiences. Some theaters even add life some of our favorite family films. Watch your kids soak up favorites like The Little Mermaid or The Wizard of Oz, both coming in March of 2014.

If you like the idea of a live stage but not sure if your kiddo would be into the acting, be on the lookout for action theater like the touring shows Blue Man Group, or STOMP. One of the great aspects of our district is the wide genera of art that appeal to our diverse demographic. It’s just one more reason to love our city.
