Play fetch with man’s best friend or enjoy one of the many family-friendly amenities at Ervan Chew Park in Montrose.

Located at 4502 Dunlavy near Richmond Avenue in the heart of Montrose, Ervan Chew Park is a favorite for pet owners, but also kids with its splash pad, playscapes, and lit ball field features.

Formerly known as Dunlavy Park, the park was renamed in 2000 and notably, was the first neighborhood park in Houston to allow dogs to legally run free, off-leash in a designated dog zone.

The 9,000 square foot fenced-in dog zone is located adjacent to the picnic area and “sprayground” and is designed to allow dogs to exercise freely.

Playscapes & Ballgames

In addition to the dog park, there are also two playscapes for kids (one for toddlers and one for older children), a basketball court for pickup games, as well as baseball and soccer fields, which provide tons of green space for kids looking to burn off some energy.

Visitors should note, there’s plenty of parking but Dunlavy Street can be busy, so if you choose to park on the street, be sure to keep a close eye on the family and your four-legged friends.

Summer Fun on the Splash Pads

Summers in Houston are steamy. There’s no way around it. Luckily, the park offers a great splash pad for those near Montrose and the Museum District.

If you haven’t been to a splash pad, imagine a Texas-sized version of running through the lawn sprinkler. Splash pads are slabs filled with unpredictable fountains to surprise and soak your kids, creating plenty of laughs along the way.

When you just can’t stay inside anymore and it’s too hot to use the awesome playgrounds around town, pack your kids’ swimsuits and head for the water.

And while the kids cool down, parents and guardians can too beneath the large, shady trees near the benches and picnic tables.
